Following up with recovered coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients is necessary. Given the importance of psychological function accompanied by significant effects of food quality, we want to examine the association between food quality score (FQS) and mental disorders among recovered COVID-19 patients. This case-control study was performed on 246 eligible adults. A validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to evaluate dietary intake. We using Depression Anxiety Stress Scales, Insomnia Severity Index, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and 36-Item Short Form Health Survey questionnaires to evaluate the psychological function. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for score categories of the FQS index and psychological function in multivariate-adjusted models. Only in case subjects, we found significant associations between adherence to the FQS diet and depression, anxiety, and stress in the crude model (OR, 0.796, 95% CI, 0.661–0.958, p = 0.016; OR, 0.824, 95% CI, 0.707–0.960, p = 0.013; OR, 0.824, 95% CI, 0.709–0.956, p = 0.011, respectively). These associations remained significant in all two adjusted models. However, no significant associations were found between FQS and psychological functions in the control group. Our data suggests that overall food quality intake is associated with depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms during the post-infection period. Also, adequate daily intakes of fruits, legumes, nuts, and whole grains are associated with reduced risks of psychological impairment and sleep disorders which are common among recovered patients.

Irisin Acts via the PGC-1α and BDNF Pathway to Improve Depression-like Behavior
Danbi Jo, Juhyun Song
Clin Nutr Res 2021;10(4):292-302.   Published online October 20, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.7762/cnr.2021.10.4.292

Depression is the most prevalent psychiatric disorder experienced by the world's population. Mechanisms associated with depression-like behavior have not been fully investigated. Among the therapeutic solution for depression, exercise is considered an important regulator attenuating depressive neuropathology. Exercise has been reported to boost the secretion of myokines such as irisin and myostatin in skeletal muscles. Myokines secreted during exercise are involved in various cellular responses including the endocrine and autocrine systems. Especially, irisin as a cleaved version of fibronectin domain-containing protein 5 has multiple functions such as white fat-browning, energy expenditure increase, anti-inflammatory effects, and mitochondrial function improvement in both systemic circulation and central nervous system. Furthermore, irisin activates energy metabolism-related signaling peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1 alpha and memory formation-related signaling brain-derived neurotrophic factor involved in depression. However, the role and mechanism of irisin in depression disorder is not obvious until now. Here, we review recent evidences regarding the therapeutic effect of irisin in depression disorder. We suggest that irisin is a key molecule that suppresses several neuropathological mechanisms involved in depression.

Association of the Anxiety/Depression with Nutrition Intake in Stroke Patients
Yoonji Kim, Myung-chul Kim, Hang-Sik Park, Il-Hoon Cho, Jean Kyung Paik
Clin Nutr Res 2018;7(1):11-20.   Published online January 30, 2018
DOI: https://doi.org/10.7762/cnr.2018.7.1.11

Stroke patients often experience a walking dysfunction caused by decreased mobility, weakened muscular strength, abnormal posture control, and cognitive dysfunction. Anxiety/depression is the most important and prevalent neuropsychiatric complication of stroke survivors. Brain injury and the presence of malnutrition after stroke contribute to metabolic status and clinical outcome of patients. We examined the level of nutrition intake in stroke patients according to their degree of anxiety/depression. The data were obtained from 2013 to 2015 through the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Study subjects were categorized to either a group having no problem of anxiety/depression (n = 274) or a group having a problem of anxiety or depression (n = 104). The EuroQoL-5 Dimensions Health Questionnaire (EQ-5D) index score was derived from the first description of an individual health status based on the EQ-5D classification system, including mobility, self-care, usual daily activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression. The mean age was 67.4 years in the normal group and 68.0 years in the anxiety or depression group. In the anxiety or depression group, 39.4% were men vs. 53.3% in the normal group. The total energy intake (p = 0.013), riboflavin (p = 0.041), and niacin (p = 0.038) was significantly higher in stroke patients with no anxiety/depression than those in stroke patients with having an anxiety/depression. The group having no problem of anxiety/depression had significantly higher EQ-5D index compared to the group having a problem of anxiety/depression group (p < 0.001) had. The results suggest the association between nutrition intake, usual activities and pain/discomfort status in the stroke patients with having an anxiety/depression.

Depression Is a Mediator for the Relationship between Physical Symptom and Psychological Well-being in Obese People
Eun Kyoung Goh, Oh Yoen Kim, Hyo Jeong Jeon
Clin Nutr Res 2017;6(2):89-98.   Published online April 26, 2017
DOI: https://doi.org/10.7762/cnr.2017.6.2.89

This present study aimed to investigate the association effect of obesity status, physical symptom, insecure attachment, and depression on psychological well-being in non-diabetic healthy Koreans. Height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, and socio-psychological questionnaires (insecure attachment, depression, and physical symptom psychological well-being, etc.) were examined in 123 healthy Koreans. Student t-test, correlation analysis, and mediation analysis were performed. Study subjects were divided into 2 groups based on body mass index (BMI, kg/m2): obesity (BMI ≥ 25, n = 36) and non-obesity (BMI < 25, n = 87). Obese people were older and showed higher proportion of males than non-obese ones. Regarding the values of socio-psychological test, obesity group showed lower insecure attachment, and higher physical symptom than non-obesity group. In correlation and mediation analyses, depression was positively related to insecure attachment and physical symptom in both BMI groups. Positive relationship between physical symptom and insecure attachment was observed only in non-obesity group, but not in obesity group. The effect of insecure attachment on psychological well-being was completely mediated by depression in both BMI groups. On the other hand, the effect of physical symptom on psychological well-being was completely mediated by depression in obesity group, but not in non-obesity group. In conclusion, this study presented that the effects of physical symptom and insecure attachment on psychological well-being were completely mediated by depression in obese healthy Koreans, but not in non-obese ones. It will provide useful data for extending the knowledge on the relationship between the physical health and mental health.

Nutritional Factors Affecting Mental Health
So Young Lim, Eun Jin Kim, Arang Kim, Hee Jae Lee, Hyun Jin Choi, Soo Jin Yang
Clin Nutr Res 2016;5(3):143-152.   Published online July 26, 2016
DOI: https://doi.org/10.7762/cnr.2016.5.3.143

Dietary intake and nutritional status of individuals are important factors affecting mental health and the development of psychiatric disorders. Majority of scientific evidence relating to mental health focuses on depression, cognitive function, and dementia, and limited evidence is available about other psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia. As life span of human being is increasing, the more the prevalence of mental disorders is, the more attention rises. Lists of suggested nutritional components that may be beneficial for mental health are omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, cholesterol, niacin, folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. Saturated fat and simple sugar are considered detrimental to cognitive function. Evidence on the effect of cholesterol is conflicting; however, in general, blood cholesterol levels are negatively associated with the risk of depression. Collectively, the aims of this review are to introduce known nutritional factors for mental health, and to discuss recent issues of the nutritional impact on cognitive function and healthy brain aging.
